What I’ve Been Reading…

I know that I have been a little MIA lately, and it’s not really on purpose, I’ve just been seriously busy! I finished my last year of college, got into grad school, 2 of my brothers graduated, etc. Even to me this just sounds like I am making excuses so I will stop here.

If you follow me on goodreads (link to my profile here), you know that I haven’t stopped reading, but I also haven’t been writing reviews. Again, I’m a busy gal. Now that it’s summer and I can breathe again, I want to catch you up on what I’ve been reading, so here goes nothing (just a few mini-reviews).

1. Book: The Infinite Sea (2nd book in the 5th Wave series)

Author: Rick Yancey

Dates Read: December 12, 2016-December 14, 2016

My thoughts: I really loved this book, it was the perfect follow up to the 1st book in the series. The characters are beautifully written and easy to love. The plot continues to shift and change and I can never guess at where the book is going to go next. I really liked the writing, characters, unique story, and friendship. I didn’t like that it left me not knowing what was going to happen (I have a MEGA-love-hate relationship with cliffhangers) and that so much of the book happens in Cassie’s mind. But overall, I give it 4 stars!

Quotes: “Can’t go back. Can’t go forward. Can’t hold on. Can’t let go.”

“Self-centered, stubborn, sentimental, childish, vain. I am humanity. Cynical, naive, kind, cruel, soft as down, hard as tungsten steel. I am humanity. He crawled. I am humanity. He fell. I am humanity. He got up.”

“Because love is irrational. It does not follow rules. Not even it’s own rules. Love is the one thing in the universe that is unpredictable.”

“It’ll just be a reminder that you’ll get hurt, but you’ll get better too. Scars remind us we can live life without fear because no matter what happens, we’ll heal. We’ll get better.”

2. Book: The Last Star (3rd book in the 5th Wave series)

The Last Star: The Final Book of The 5th Wave by [Yancey, Rick]

Author: Rick Yancey

Dates Read: April 7, 2017-April 21, 2017

My thoughts: Short version: an amazing end to this series. Baffling. Not what I wanted or what I expected, but truly great. Over these three books, Yancey weaved a beautiful and unique story that kept changing and kept me guessing. I really fell in love with the characters and I was able to sympathize with them as they went through these aweful trials. I hated the way it ended, but there is nothing that I can do about it (besides if it had ended any differently the story wouldn’t have been nearly as amazing.

Quotes: “Life is a circle bound by fear. The fear of the predator. The fear of the prey. Without fear, life would not exist.”

“Cogito ergo sum. More than the sum of our experiences, our memories are the ultimate proof of reality.”

“Know what you do when you can’t stand up and march, soldier? You crawl.”

3. Book: Firstlife

Firstlife (An Everlife Novel) by [Showalter, Gena]

Author: Gena Showalter

Dates Read: February 5, 2017-February 8th, 2017

My thoughts: Just wow. I wasn’t sure what to think about this book. It has shown up on my Pinterest several times and I kind of just figured what the hell, so I checked it out from the library and OMG! The story was so unique, the characters so easy to sympathize with, it was the perfect storm. The second book hadn’t even come out when I finished the first, so now I am on a waiting list (ugh!). I really loved how unique the story was, how well it was written, and the characters (of course). I didn’t necessarily love the way it ended or how long some of the parts of the story went. But I think it was a truly great book and I cannot wait to read the next one.

Quotes: “Two or more glasses of wine a day can severely reduce your risk of giving a shit.”

“The grave is the end

And I will never accept that

I have been set free from the chains that bind me.

I know “Death has lost its victory”

Is a lie, because there is no greater truth than this:

‘Life is hopeless'”

(now read it bottom to top)

“Grass isn’t greener on the other side. Grass is greener when you water it.”

“Without pressure, there would be no diamonds. Without tests and trials, you wouldn’t know your own strength – or weakness.”

4. Book: Graceling

Graceling (Graceling Realm Book 1) by [Cashore, Kristin]

Author:  Kristin Cashore

Dates read: April 24, 2017-April 26, 2017

My thoughts: I DEVOURED this book. I seriously loved the escape it gave me during one of the busiest weeks of my college semester. Cashore weaves a tale of strength, individuality, challenges, and love perfectly together in this easy to read book. I really loved the characters (especially the female heroine), setting, and the romance. I wasn’t a huge fan of the

Quotes: “But you’re better than me, Katsa. And it doesn’t humiliate me. It humbles me. But it doesn’t humiliate me.”

There were a couple more, but I think they’ll just give too much away, so I’ll let you read it for yourself.

Currently reading: A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness and Siobhan Dowd, Ice Like Fire by Sara Raasch, The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson, and The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman.

Let’s chat! Have you read any of these books? Do you feel the same way I do? Differently? Any reading suggestions? I would LOVE to hear from you!
