Easy Crochet Cowl

Hello, friends! Today I’m going to share one of the Christmas gifts I made this year, a beautiful cowl.

This is a really easy pattern that takes about one viewing of Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? Yes, that’s the best way I know how to measure time 🙂

Anyway, I used Lion Brand Super Bulky in coral. I thought I had everything I needed for this, but I was wrong. I didn’t have a needle thick enough (crochet or knit), so I improvised. I crocheted this with my hands. (Did you know that was possible because I didn’t!?!)

I literally just used my index finger as if it were my crochet hook and went to town.

  1. Chain 13. Turn.
  2. *Single crochet 12. Chain 1. Turn
  3. – 21. Continue from * (or more if you want it to be longer, like an infinity scarf)

Sew ends together (I also used mu fingers for this, just pushing the yarn through like you would with a needle — I found that this was easier because the yarn is SO thick).

And viola! Just like that (in a movies time) you have a cute cowl.

If you give this a try, let me know how it goes for you/what your thoughts are!

If We Were Having Coffee, Take 1

Hello lovely! I’ve seen my FAVORITE blogger of all time, Jamie, do this time and time again. And I love it! Sometimes, instead of writing a post (writing at you), I want to write with you. As if we were having coffee together.

So grab your hot (or cold) drink of choice, and join me for a little chat. I’ve got a caramel macchiato, what about you?

If we were having coffee… I would tell you that my last semester as an undergraduate just kicked off and I am SWAMPED! I challenged myself to a 4.0 semester last semester, and I did it. So, naturally, I want to do it again. Unfortunately, this semester started before I was ready…  So it’s catch-up time this weekend!

If we were having coffee… I would tell you that I am struggling to finish up my graduate school applications before the deadlines (in a week and a half!). There is so much that no one tells you about taking this route for my future. (When it’s all said and done, I will try to make a list for you later.)

If we were having coffee… I would tell you that my healthy year has been off to a great start. I am still doing YWA #yogarevolution, It’s day 20 and I have not missed a single day (or done one late). I am so proud of myself. I have also eaten minimal sugar (yes, there was one slip up when I was sick), and I started running. So I’m proud and trying so hard to keep on this positivity kick.

If we were having coffee… I’d tell you that my best friend is getting married in a little over a year and I get to help make her day so special 🙂 (This is super cool because my husband and I are the ones who introduced them.)

If we were having coffee… I would tell you about how I feel like I am missing “me” time. I know my mom would roll her eyes at me, but I spend so much time at school, studying, working, and doing housework that I don’t get to do much for me.

If we were having coffee… I would tell you that I really want to work on reading my classics this year. I got Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights for Christmas from my brother-in-law and they are on the top of my list. I also want to read Little Women, War of the Worlds, Ferinheight 451, The Violinists Thumb, Emma, and Lord of the Flies. THIS YEAR. But I feel like I have to force myself to read because my time is so limited, and when it’s forced it really sucks.

If we were having coffee…  What would YOU tell ME? What’s going on in your world right now? Are you starting this new year off as swamped as I am? Or are you just being successful all the way? How are your new year’s resolutions holding up?

LET’S TALK!

Why I Don’t Believe in New Years Resolutions, but Take Part Anyway.

Hello, friend! Sorry that this post is coming to you a little late, but we just got back from our holiday vacation. I hope that you had a great new year and that you are as excited for what’s coming as I am. The new year is such an exciting time! The possibilities truly feel endless. It’s the beginning of 365 unwritten days.

But what makes this one day SO special? Why do we think that we can change everything just because it’s a new year? When I think about it, it seems wrong that the only reason we try to change is because it is a new year. And then the new year gets closer…

And I get excited. The open year seems so inviting, so endless. And I start thinking about the things that I want to accomplish this year. After all, I will graduate from college, Zach will graduate from college, we could be getting our first home, we could get real-world jobs. There is just so much the could happen. So many things that I can MAKE happen.

And so I make my resolutions:

  • I am participating in Yoga with Adriene’s #yogarevolution. This is my third year doing her 31 day youtube yoga and I just can’t get enough. These challenges provide an amazing chance to connect to others and to myself. Overall, a great way to start the new year!
  • I am giving up added sugar. Right now, this is mostly abstaining from the leftover Christmas cookies. My MASSIVE sweet tooth has been the downfall of every diet I have ever even thought about participating in. So I am starting with that. I want to continue this and eventually ween myself off creamer in my coffee and refined carbs. (In addition, I think that cutting fingernails from my diet would also be helpful.)
  • I am going to practice being thankful. I’ve never successfully meditated (I fell asleep the only time I tried), but I just want to purposely take a few moments every day to be thankful. I feel like 2016 was such a negative year. And instead of complaining about what is going wrong I will be thankful for all that is going right.

Let’s chat: Are you making any resolutions this year? What are they? Do you think resolutions are worth the effort or that this one day will not make the difference?

On a final note, Zach and I have been together for 5 years!
